An individual sport in a team environment – Our homeschool challenge youth athletes (ages 6-14) both mentally and physically in a fun, encouraging environment.
Class begins with a 10-15 minute game; games stress attention skills and teamwork.
After that, there will be a set of dynamic exercises/stretches focused on preparing athletes for physical activity, combined with a set of developmental exercises focused on a physical education goal or movement skill.
The fencing portion of class is full of instruction on footwork, blade drills, free bouting, and (ever-popular) fencing games! Students will use discovery and problem-based methods to solve problems and acquire new skills.
Coach Sophie is a 2018 Duke graduate and co-captain of the women's fencing team. In addition to being a North American Cup finalist for USA Fencing and having qualified for post-season NCAA play, she was named to ACC Academic Honor Roll all four years of her undergraduate career.
While she enjoys coaching at all age and skill levels, her heart lies with beginning youth fencing. She has worked as a coach at Charlottesville Fencing Alliance, Blue Ridge Fencing Center, and the Charlottesville Albemarle Parks & Recreation Department.
